Hardys Eileen Hardy Shiraz 1997

Hardys Eileen Hardy Shiraz 1997
As a tribute to the matriarch of Australia's best known winemaking and sailing family, the first Eileen Hardy Shiraz was released in 1973. Eileen actively influenced the Hardy company between 1938 and 1975 and was awarded an OBE in 1977 for her outstanding contribution to the wine industry.
In recognition of this great lady, each vintage the winemakers select the very best Shiraz to carry the "Eileen Hardy" label. This 1997 vintage is a blend of McLaren Vale fruit and was produced using the time honoured winemaking techniques of open fermentation and basket pressing at Hardys Tintara winery. It was then matured for 2 years in a combination of new and one year old French oak barrels.
Fresh black cherry, blackberry and cracked black pepper aromas are complexed by spice and herbal aromas of rosemary, nutmeg and cloves. The flavours on the palate are exceptionally long and similar to those on the nose, with hints of liquorice and sage while the mouthfeel is lively, velvety and powerful. A seamless finish which possesses fine structured tannins and subtle toasty vanillin oak characters is well integrated into the body of the wine. Careful cellaring for 7 to 10 years and decanting the wine before serving is recommended.

Penfolds Grange Shiraz Bin 95 1993
$600.00

Penfolds Grange Shiraz Bin 95 1993
Grange is recognised as Australia's and indeed one of the world's finest red wines. This great wine, developed by Max Schubert commencing with the 1951 vintage, is made from low yielding Shiraz vines grown at selected vineyards in South Australia and matured in new American oak hogsheads prior to bottling.
During an extensive tour of the Bordeaux region of France in 1950, Max Schubert studied winemaking practices that have now become an integral part of Penfolds' winemaking technique. He also observed the practice of maturing wine in new oak casks, a method previously untried in Australia. The development of Grange represented the beginning of a new era in Australia's red winemaking tradition. This knowledge, combined with Max Schubert's foresight, skill and dedication, has resulted in Grange, the definitive Australian dry red table wine, acknowledged to be among the world's classic wine styles.
Dense plum red merging to brick red on rims. Intense blackcurrant and plum with malt, fig and liquorice aromas that leap from the glass. This has all the characters of a classic Grange. What is promised on the nose is delivered on the palate - a powerful, concentrated, opulent wine. Layers of Shiraz fruit and first class oak manifest themselves into a seemingly endless variety of flavours - deep plum, liquorice, black olive, chocolate, cedar, coffee, etc, all compressed into a silken, round mouth feel. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. It is hard to believe that 100% new American oak was used - the intensity of fruit has all but soaked it up.
Grange has been almost unbeatable in wine shows, whether it be in the young vintage classes or the old open classes, having accumulated since 1962 some 117 gold, 63 silver and 34 bronze medals, plus 27 trophies and 7 championship awards.
