But the local industry had withered on the vine by the end of the 19th century and it was not until the late 1950s when pioneers Jean Miguet and Claudio Alcorso planted vineyards in the north and south of the island. They understood that with the island's mild summers and long, sunny autumns, Tasmania's growing conditions were similar to the great European wine-growing regions of Burgundy, Alsace and Champagne. They were right! Today, Tasmania's vineyards specialise in the classic cool-climate varieties, including pinot noir, riesling, chardonnay, pinot gris and sauvignon blanc. Along the wine routes there are dozens of boutique vineyards as well as some high-quality vineyard restaurants. The island's key wine regions include:
